Jose Rafaél Pascual Vilaplana
Conductor and Composer. Principal Conductor of Banda Municipal de Bilbao and Banda Municipal de Barcelona.
Born in Muro, the 30th April 1971. Started the musical studies in the UM Muro with the euphonium and the piano. Later on studied in the Conservatories of Alcoi (Alicante) and Valencia. Studied Conducting of Winds Bands with Jan COBER and Orchestral Conducting in Wien with Karl ÖSTERREICHER, Yuji YUHASA and Hans GRAF. Is also student with Eugene CORPORON (University of North Texas) and also in Slovenia with Georges PEHLIVANIAN. Work as a guest conductor with several orchestras in Argentina, Belgium, Colombia, Cuba, England, Germany, Holland, Italy, Portugal, Spain, Switzerland, Uruguay and USA: National Young Wind Orchestra of Netherlands, The Royal Marine Band of Netherlands, Schwabisches Jugend Blasorchester, Slovenian Armed Forces Band, Banda Municipal de Buenos Aires, Banda Nacional de Cuba, Banda Nacional Juvenil de Colombia, Banda Sinfónica de Montevideo, Banda de la Federazione Trentina in Trento (Italia), Banda Sinfónica Portuguesa de Porto (Portugal), Civica Filarmonica di Lugano, AULOS Blasorchester. In Spain works as a guest conductor with the professional wind bands of A Coruña, Alicante, Barcelona, Castellón, Madrid, Palma de Mallorca, Vitoria, Santa Cruz de Tenerife, Santiago de Compostela, Vitoria, Banda de MUSIKENE, Banda y Orquesta del CONSMUPA en Oviedo, Banda Conservatorio Superior de Canarias, Banda Conservatorio Superior de Granada,… Also conducts the several symphonic orchestras like Orquesta Sinfonia from Bucharest (Romania), Orquesta Sinfónica de Matanzas (Cuba), Orquesta Sinfónica de Albacete, Orquesta Sinfónica de Castellón, O.S. de Murcia, O.S. del Vallés, O.S. “Ciutat d’Elx”, Chamber Orchestra “Manuel de Falla” de Cádiz, O. Filarmónica de Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, O.S. de Castilla y León, Orquesta Sinfónica de Bilbao... In this projects collaborated with prestigious soloists: Sergei Nakariakov, Jorgen van Rijen, Ben van Dijk, Claudi Arimany, Albert Guinovart, Elisabethe Matos, Nuno Pinto, Luis González, Ximo Vicedo, Vicente Alberola, Pacho Flores, Manuel Blanco, Asier Polo…. From 2001 to 2013 was a principal conductor of Orquesta Sinfónica de Albacete and also principal guest conductor of Orquestra Camera Musicae from Tarragona.
At the present and fro 2015 is principal conductor and artisticall director of Banda Municipal de Bilbao. From 2018 is also principal conductor of Banda Municipal de Barcelona. Is principal conductor since the foundation of Orquestra de Vents “Filharmonia” and principal guest conductor of Banda Sinfonica Portuguesa. Is teacher in Conducting of Wind Bands in Joventuts Musicals de la Vall d’Albaida (Valencia) and guest teacher in ISEB in Trento (Italy). Is artistically director in the summer courses of the Istituto Musicale G.A. Fano from Spilimbergo (Italy). Have activity as a guest teacher in Portugal, France, Italy, Switzerland, Colombia, Germany… As a composer have works from wind band, choir and chamber music, and one musical: Balansiyyà (for soloist, choir and wind band). Pascual-Vilaplana received many commissions from several festivals and famous soloist (Spanish Brass, Steven Mead…). Pascual-Vilaplana is the conductor of more of thirty CD’s published by RTVE Música, Audioart, Molenaar, De Haske… In 1991 is decorated with the “Batuta del Mtro. Guillermo Tomás” of the National Wind Band of Cuba in La Havana. In 1997 won the First Prize “Gold Baton” of the WMC from Kerkrade (Netherlands). In april 2000 won the First Prize of the “1st. European Conductors Competition” in Birmingham (UK) organisated by EBBA (European Brass Band Association). In 2004 is condecorated with the Euterpe Prix in Conducting Wind Bands and in Composition by Valencian Federation of Wind Bands. In 2010 received the National Prix of Music “Ignacio Morales Nieva” from the Festival de Música de Castilla La Mancha.
